Hanbury and Company, a British firm in Shanghai, and for the last
6 years has been in the employment of Messrs. Reuter brakelmann
, and Company. There is no objection to him on the score of pro- 7850-German sympathies, although of course there is the suspicion
mentioned in my cypher telegram, paraphrase of which is enclosed. Your reply, paraphrase enclosed, confirmed my own reading of your telegram of the 16th. of October, but as local British Firms are most anxious to secure the many Agencies for British Firms formerly held by German Firms, and as there exists a strong impression that the suppression of German trade was in part directed to that ob- -ject, I deemed it desirable to obtain an expression of your
opinion on the point.

that while I cannot accept Mr. Schlüter I am prepared to accept Mr. H. Cheetham and I enclose copy of their telegraphic reply.

that I have refused an application made by Mr. Hakon Schlüter to act as Agent for Mr. Alfred Richter of New York who had been approached by the Texas Oil Company of New York to look after their petroleum business in Hongkong.
